KOROR, PALAU / RankWire.AI / – The United States announced more than $150 million in support for Pacific Island countries during a regional meeting in Palau. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau unveiled the package on September 1 at the Pacific Islands Forum Partners Dialogue. The funding and assistance cover energy security, transport, digital infrastructure, maritime enforcement and public services. The State Department said the package brings together several programs across Pacific Island nations.

US launches Pacific support package exceeding $150 million
Pacific Island energy, digital and maritime projects form part of new US support.

A $60 million Regional Energy Security Initiative represents one of the largest parts of the announcement. The State Department said it intends to provide the funding while working with Congress. The initiative will support fuel storage projects and measures that strengthen electricity grid reliability. U.S. officials also outlined additional infrastructure investments designed to improve access to essential services. Several elements remain subject to congressional action before the money becomes available.

Tonga will receive U.S. support for a study of its fuel transport and storage system. The U.S. Trade and Development Agency approved a $1.42 million grant for the feasibility study. The work will examine port facilities, pipelines, storage capacity and Tonga’s fuel pricing framework. Plans call for evaluating an increase in national fuel reserves from roughly 15 to 20 days of supply to about 60 days. The project forms part of the wider regional energy package.

Energy projects focus on storage and infrastructure

The package also includes a planned $50 million U.S. contribution toward a port upgrade on Penrhyn in the Cook Islands. New Zealand plans to contribute NZ$17.5 million and lead implementation with the Cook Islands and United States. The project will improve port safety, cargo handling and transport access on the remote atoll. It will also support connections to local services. The partners announced the funding during the same regional discussions in Palau.

Digital and transport projects extend the program to Tonga, Palau and the Marshall Islands. The U.S. Trade and Development Agency will support a study to modernize Tonga’s national data center and network. Technical assistance in the Marshall Islands will cover its mobile network, key ports and Amata Kabua International Airport. Palau will receive support for a feasibility study linked to relocating Belau National Hospital. Those projects add communications, aviation and public infrastructure to the package.

Maritime security and technology programs broaden support

The United States also plans $17 million for programs addressing illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, subject to congressional work. The effort will cover legal reforms, compliance training and monitoring technology. Washington and Palau will also co-chair a new conference of Pacific police ministers. The meeting will focus on maritime security, drug trafficking, cybercrime and illicit finance. U.S. officials included the law enforcement measures among the wider commitments announced to Pacific Island countries.

Additional projects cover cloud technology, seabed mapping and drinking water services. U.S. programs will expand cloud support for Pacific governments and provide assistance for marine mapping and characterization. Environmental officials also plan a drinking water sampling initiative in Palau, including training for local operators and laboratory staff. The overall package exceeds $150 million across planned funding, grants and technical assistance. Some projects have already received agency backing, while others depend on congressional approval.
