OpenAI drops text chat limits on ChatGPT Free and Go

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is broadening ChatGPT access for Free and Go users by removing text chat limits under GPT-5.6 Luna. The company said unlimited text conversations will begin next week, with abuse safeguards still applying. Luna is also becoming the default model for those plans during the current rollout. Free users will receive a Think button at the same time. The feature allows the model to spend additional time reasoning through more demanding questions before it responds.

The expanded allowance covers standard text conversations rather than every function available inside ChatGPT. Limits will continue to apply to image generation, file uploads and other tools that use additional computing resources. OpenAI said the Think button will arrive alongside unlimited text access next week. Users can activate it when a question benefits from more reasoning time. The change gives Free and Go accounts broader use of ChatGPT’s core conversational feature while preserving separate limits across other tools and services.

GPT-5.6 consists of several models, including Luna, Sol and Terra, which serve different performance needs. Luna operates as the faster and more cost-efficient model within the family. OpenAI said about one billion people now use ChatGPT each week for tasks that include research, planning, writing and search. The latest update makes Luna the primary ChatGPT model for Free and Go users. Other GPT-5.6 models remain available within products and plans designed for different workloads and levels of access.

Free access expands while tool limits remain

ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers are receiving an updated GPT-5.6 Sol model for routine use and more complex reasoning. The company said Sol now gives more focused answers and reduces excess detail when shorter responses meet the user’s needs. Paid subscribers are also gaining a reasoning slider on web, mobile and desktop. The control lets users adjust how much processing the model applies to a request. It can be used for research, coding, writing, planning and other tasks that require different reasoning levels.

OpenAI also published results from internal tests focused on factual accuracy in its newest models. The evaluations covered financial, medical and legal questions that required detailed factual responses. The company reported about 62% fewer answers containing at least one factual error with GPT-5.6 Luna compared with GPT-5.5 Instant. GPT-5.6 Sol showed a reduction of about 68% under the same testing approach. OpenAI also reported better performance involving dates, numbers, sources, rules and assumptions when those details affected the final response.

Updated models add protections for younger users

The GPT-5.6 models include added safeguards for users the system believes are under 18. These protections cover romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges and claims that could encourage users to replace real-world relationships. Other boundaries apply to sexual material, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted goods and graphic violence. OpenAI said it introduced additional evaluations for responses involving younger users. The same abuse safeguards will remain in effect when unlimited text conversations reach Free and Go accounts under the expanded ChatGPT access.

The rollout applies to the main ChatGPT service and does not change every product that uses GPT-5.6. Versions of GPT-5.6 Sol operating in ChatGPT Work and Codex remain unchanged as part of this update. Plus and Pro users can access the revised Sol model and reasoning controls now. Free and Go users are receiving Luna as their default model this week. Unlimited text conversations and the Think button will follow next week, while separate limits remain for images, uploads and other processing-intensive tools.
