Diesel prices stay high on tight US and European supplies

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – Diesel prices remained elevated Wednesday as tight inventories and refinery outages strained fuel supplies in the United States and Europe. U.S. ultra-low sulfur diesel futures had climbed 7.4% on Monday to settle at $4.19 a gallon. That marked the largest daily advance since July 13. The contract traded near $4.28 a gallon early Wednesday as refined-product markets continued to reflect limited supply across major consuming regions.

Diesel prices stay high on tight US and European supplies
Refinery disruptions and export limits tighten diesel supply across major markets.

U.S. diesel inventories remain well below recent seasonal levels. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported 107.2 million barrels of distillate stocks for the week ended July 31. That total was 3.5 million barrels lower than the previous week. Inventories also stood 5.1% below the same period last year and 16.1% below the comparable level in 2024. Distillates include diesel and heating oil, both of which play major roles in transportation, industry and seasonal energy demand.

Retail diesel prices have also stayed high despite a modest weekly decline. The national U.S. average reached $5.257 a gallon on August 10, down from $5.348 one week earlier. The latest price remained well above the $4.578 average recorded on July 6. European fuel markets have faced similar pressure, with low-sulfur gasoil margins rising sharply. The premium over crude reached a record $74.66 a barrel on July 30 as finished diesel commanded higher values.

Refinery outages reduce global diesel availability

Several refinery disruptions have further reduced the supply of diesel available to international buyers. An attack damaged a refinery in Russia’s Tatarstan region, adding to lower processing activity in the country. Saudi Arabia’s Jazan refinery has remained offline since July 27 following an earlier attack. The shutdown removed another source of refined products from global trade. Refinery runs across several producing regions had already fallen below year-earlier levels during June, limiting the amount of fuel entering international markets.

Export controls have added another constraint to refined-product flows. Russia extended restrictions on gasoline and diesel exports through January 31, 2027. Middle East shipments have also faced sharply lower vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. China has supplied fewer refined fuels as domestic refinery activity weakened. The European Central Bank reported diesel pump prices near €1.98 per litre in the third week of July, while higher refining margins accounted for a larger share of retail fuel costs.

US refinery activity remains high as inventories stay low

American refiners have processed large volumes of crude, but diesel inventories have not returned to normal seasonal levels. Crude inputs during the first seven months of 2026 reached their highest level for that period since 2019. Refinery utilization has remained strong as processing margins increased. Even so, distillate stocks entered August at their lowest level for this time of year in about three decades. The inventory shortage has coincided with reduced product flows from several overseas refining centers.

Crude oil prices also advanced Wednesday, with Brent near $89.81 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate around $84.08. Diesel prices have faced stronger pressure as shortages center on finished fuel rather than crude supply alone. Diesel supports trucking, agriculture, construction, manufacturing and other commercial activity across both regions. Low U.S. inventories, high European refining margins, refinery outages and export limits continue to define a tight global market for diesel and other middle-distillate fuels.
