Los Angeles heat wave keeps October near record levels

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Southern California remained locked in exceptional October heat Tuesday as downtown Los Angeles reached 101°F. The temperature marked a fifth consecutive day of triple-digit readings in the city center. Forecasters kept dangerous heat alerts in place across large parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The National Weather Service said extreme heat warnings would continue through 8 p.m. Thursday. Several communities also faced unusually warm nights, which offered residents little relief after hot afternoons.

Los Angeles heat wave keeps October near record levels
Los Angeles remains unusually hot as Southern California’s October heat wave continues.

The latest reading followed a punishing Monday that produced record temperatures across the region. Downtown Los Angeles climbed to 104°F and broke its October 5 record of 101°F. Woodland Hills reached 106°F, while Anaheim and Long Beach each recorded 104°F. Los Angeles International Airport hit 101°F during the same stretch. The widespread heat reached both inland valleys and coastal communities, where Pacific air often keeps daytime temperatures lower than areas farther from the ocean.

Tuesday stayed far hotter than normal despite a slight drop from Monday’s peak. Downtown Los Angeles ran 21 degrees above its normal October 6 high of 80°F. Burbank Airport also reached 101°F, roughly 20 degrees above its seasonal average. High overnight readings added to the strain across many neighborhoods. The continuing warmth has reduced the hours available for buildings and outdoor spaces to cool before temperatures rise again the following day.

High pressure sustains widespread October heat

A persistent ridge of high pressure has supported the prolonged Southern California heat wave. Sinking air beneath the system has raised temperatures while weak offshore flow has reduced the cooling influence from the coast. Warm ocean conditions have also limited the strength of the marine layer near beaches. Together, those factors have helped maintain unusually high temperatures across a broad area rather than confining the hottest weather to inland valleys and desert locations.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health advised residents to drink water regularly and limit strenuous activity during peak heat. The department also urged people to use air-conditioned spaces when needed and check on people more vulnerable to extreme temperatures. Older adults, young children and people without reliable cooling can face greater risks during extended hot spells. Warm nights can increase those risks because the body receives less time to recover before daytime temperatures climb again.

Cooler conditions forecast toward the weekend

Temperatures should begin easing later Thursday, with a larger cooldown expected as the weekend approaches. Downtown Los Angeles could still reach the upper 90s Wednesday before the hottest conditions weaken. Burbank may again approach triple digits during the final phase of the heat event. Forecast temperatures then fall closer to seasonal levels across many communities. Highs in parts of the region could return to the 70s and 80s, while a chance of light showers may develop Sunday.

Southern California’s coast also faces hazardous surf and strong rip currents during the weather shift. Parts of the Ventura County coastline remain under a coastal flood advisory through Friday. High tides may produce minor flooding around low-lying beaches, harbor walkways and nearby parking areas. The coastal hazards add another concern after several days of extreme heat and unusually warm nights. Cooler weather later this week would bring the region closer to typical October conditions after an exceptional early-month heat spell.
