Magnitude 5.0 quake hits Alaska’s Aleutian Islands

ATKA, ALASKA / RankWire.AI / – A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck southeast of Atka in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands late Saturday. The Alaska Earthquake Center recorded the event at 7:36 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time on August 8. That corresponded to 03:36 UTC on August 9. The quake occurred about 48 miles, or 77 kilometers, southeast of Atka. Scientists calculated its depth at roughly 17 kilometers, or 10.6 miles, placing the event within a highly active seismic zone.

Magnitude 5.0 quake hits Alaska’s Aleutian Islands
Atka sits within Alaska’s seismically active Aleutian island chain.

The reviewed earthquake occurred near 51.8286 degrees north latitude and 173.2496 degrees west longitude. Atka lies on Atka Island along the central Aleutian chain. The small community stands far from Alaska’s largest population centers and within a region known for frequent earthquakes. The epicenter also fell southwest of Seguam Island and Amukta Pass. Several islands, volcanic features and underwater geological structures surround the broader area where Saturday’s earthquake occurred.

The magnitude 5.0 event originated at a relatively shallow depth for the wider Aleutian seismic system. Earthquakes beneath the island chain can occur from near the surface to far deeper within the Earth. The region sits above a major boundary between the Pacific Plate and North American Plate. The Pacific Plate moves beneath the North American Plate along the Aleutian Arc. This continuing geological process produces frequent earthquakes across much of southern and western Alaska.

Tectonic boundary shapes Aleutian seismic activity

The Aleutian Arc stretches across a broad section of the North Pacific and ranks among Alaska’s most active earthquake regions. Scientists call the downward movement of one tectonic plate beneath another subduction. That process can generate earthquakes at shallow, intermediate and deep levels. Alaska records thousands of earthquakes each year across its mainland and offshore regions. Many occur beneath the Aleutian Islands, where the plate boundary extends westward for hundreds of miles.

The Aleutian region also has a long history of major earthquakes. A magnitude 8.6 earthquake struck the Andreanof Islands in 1957. A magnitude 8.7 event followed near the Rat Islands in 1965. Large earthquakes also occurred in the Andreanof Islands in 1986 and 1996. Those historic events differed greatly in scale from Saturday’s magnitude 5.0 earthquake. Together, they illustrate the wide range of seismic activity recorded along the Aleutian plate boundary.

Monitoring networks track earthquakes across Alaska

Earthquakes around the Aleutians can originate in several parts of the tectonic system. Some develop close to the main boundary between the two plates. Others occur deeper inside the Pacific Plate as it descends beneath Alaska. Shallow crustal earthquakes can also develop above the plate boundary. The U.S. Geological Survey maintains national earthquake records and reviews seismic measurements across the country. Its earthquake monitoring work complements regional systems that cover Alaska’s vast and remote landscape.

Saturday’s earthquake adds another moderate event to the extensive seismic record of the Aleutian Islands. Its magnitude, location and depth provide the central measurements used to describe the quake. Seismic stations across Alaska detect ground motion from events in both populated and remote regions. Specialists review those signals to refine earthquake locations, magnitudes and depths. The August 8 event near Atka reflects the continuing seismic activity that monitoring networks routinely record across Alaska and the surrounding North Pacific.
