US travel advisory flags crime terrorism in Belgium

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The U.S. State Department has revised its travel advisory for Belgium, adding crime and unrest to the country’s stated risks. The July 23 update keeps Belgium at Level 2, which asks Americans to exercise increased caution. Terrorism also remains part of the advisory. The guidance does not tell travelers to cancel visits or avoid the country. It instead outlines security concerns and practical steps for people visiting Brussels and other Belgian destinations.

US travel advisory flags crime terrorism in Belgium
Updated guidance highlights crime, terrorism and unrest risks for Belgium visitors.

The advisory warns that pickpockets and bag thieves often target crowded tourist areas. Railway stations, airports, restaurants, buses, trams and metro systems require added attention. Officials also cite purse snatching, phone theft and property stolen from vehicles. Travelers should secure passports, cash and electronic devices while moving through busy public spaces. The State Department advises visitors to keep valuables out of sight and avoid leaving bags unattended, even for brief periods.

Rail passengers face specific risks when they store luggage on overhead racks or near train doors. The guidance notes increased bag theft on routes between Brussels and Amsterdam. Thieves may create distractions or move in groups to take wallets, phones and small travel bags. Belgian Federal Police urge passengers to keep important belongings close throughout each journey. Travelers should watch their luggage during station stops, boarding periods and crowded transfers between trains.

Theft concerns center on transport networks

The terrorism section covers public events, hotels, restaurants, shopping areas, schools and places of worship. Parks, transportation systems and other crowded locations also appear in the warning. Belgium maintains a national threat rating of Level 3 on a four-level scale. The country’s threat assessment authority describes that level as serious. It applies when officials consider a terrorism or extremism threat possible and likely. Visitors should remain alert and follow instructions from local authorities.

Public demonstrations and strikes can also affect travel across Belgium. Large gatherings may slow road traffic, delay rail services or interrupt city transportation. Police may close streets or limit access near protest sites. The advisory tells Americans to avoid demonstrations and monitor local information before traveling through affected areas. Visitors should check train, bus and metro schedules during labor actions or major public events. These precautions apply in Brussels and other large cities.

    Emergency planning supports safer travel

The State Department recommends using the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, known as STEP. The program sends security messages and helps the U.S. Embassy in Brussels contact citizens during emergencies. Travelers should review entry requirements, local laws and health guidance before leaving home. They should also keep copies of passports and other key documents. Sharing an itinerary with relatives or trusted contacts can help officials and family members respond after an emergency.

Belgium uses 112 for urgent police, fire and medical assistance. Travelers can call 101 for local police services within the country. The advisory also urges caution near banks, ticket machines and ATMs, where thieves may watch distracted visitors. Americans should monitor official notices and keep emergency contact details available during their stay. Belgium remains under the Level 2 advisory, with crime, terrorism and unrest forming the main concerns in the latest update.
